To commission a portrait Josonia Palaitis is one of Australia's most sought after portrait painters. She paints her portraits in oils and works consistently for several months on one painting at a time. Dedication to the undertaking of a major work and the many, often subtle processes involved, allow her to forge a meaningful connection with her subject, which in turn enables her to portray a true sense of character. When it is decided that a portrait will proceed, the artist takes a variety of photos of the subject. From these she develops several watercolour studies which show possibilities for the final painting. These ideas can be discussed with the subject before beginning work on the portrait. The portrait is painted entirely in the artist's studio using the photographic reference.
